LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES AT KHAYA
"We immerse the people who make Khaya cookies in a total, integrated and ongoing learning process to ensure real empowerment." - Alicia Polak, Founder
Artisanal baking—working in small batches with hand-selected products to create the finest product possible—is indeed a valuable and treasured skill. And our bakers excel at their art. But it’s only part of the skill set those who produce Khaya cookies receive.
A Tapestry of Skills
Beyond specific business skills, the women and men who produce Khaya Cookies receive counseling in personal and family issues, financial management and numerous health and safety issues—the kinds of issues that are transferable to their lives. This kind of empowerment helps instill pride and confidence—intangible qualities, but essential to self-reliance.
One result of the on-going work and life skills training at Khaya? We’re happy to say that no one gets bored, everyone is challenged, and the production facility runs smoothly, as Khaya Cookie bakers are able to step into different roles with ease.
THE BIG PICTURE
A 10-year Plan
Many of the problems plaguing the Mbkweni township require long, dedicated efforts to even begin to show progress. They simply can’t be solved in a few years. That is why we have created a 10-year plan to help employees to achieve several long-term goals, including:
Increase in home ownership
Establishment of a day care center
Improvement in absenteeism
